January 25, 2006 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Long Island Rough Riders News Release
Plainview, NY Jan 24, 2006 Matthew Uy, a member of both the Under-15 New York Rough Riders and B.W. Gottschee teams, was one of forty players chosen to attend the U.S. National Team Residency Program in Bradenton, FL.
For six months, Uy, a native of New Hyde Park, NY, will attend classes at Edison Academy in the morning. Afternoons will consist of daily training at the IMG Academy, headquarters of the Residency Program, with Under-17 Head Coach John Hackworth and Assistant Coaches Keith Fulk, Raul Diaz Arce, Tim Mulqueen and Brian Maisonneuve.
"Playing for the Rough Riders and Gottschee prepared me for a higher level of competition," Uy said. He credits his coach at Gottschee, former World Cup and Rough Riders standout Wilmer Cabrera, with improving his game. "He always told us stories about his career and his professional experience was really helpful as a player." Uy, who models his play after English National Team midfielder Frank Lampart, considers his best asset to be his skilled passing ability. "I have good vision out on the field, which makes me a good passer," he said. His ultimate goal is to participate on the Men's National Team, following in the footsteps of former Residency members Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley.
The U.S. National Team Residency Program is designed to prepare players for the 2007 FIFA Under- 17 World Championship in South Korea. Since the program's inception in 1999, more than thirty players from the program have gone on to play Major League Soccer or to European professional teams.
