Long Island Rough Riders News Release
(Plainview, N.Y., August 14, 2004) â The last match of the 2004 season for the Long Island Rough Riders ended with a 2-0 victory over the Western Mass Pioneers on Saturday night, August 14th.
The Rough Riders had split the season series thus far with the Pioneers. The last game on July 3rd was won by Long Island, when defender Wilmer Cabrera scored the game winner in the injury time with only ten second left in the game.
Just like this last game tonight's match was very intense and physical. The Pioneers fought for a playoff spot. The Rough Riders had already buried their play-off hopes a week ago when they've had lost 3-0 against the Wilmington Hammerheads.
The first half of the match was evenly played, with Rough Rider Jim Rooney and Pioneer Jeff Deren being the dominating actors on the field. Long Island goalkeeper Dan Sirota made some fine saves, which secured a score of 0-0 at halftime.
The first goal for Long Island was scored in the 56th minute. Midfielder Carlo Espinosa crossed the ball to forward Sean Higgins, who was able to send the ball past Western Mass goalkeeper Bryan O'Quinn.
In the last minutes of the regular time Long Island was able to score again. Carlo Espinosa and midfield partner Jim Rooney played a nice combination, and Rooney chipped the ball to Derrick Etienne. The Long Island forward finished with a volley for his eleventh goal of the season.
The wild affair this Saturday night saw not only a soccer battle on the field. When Pioneer Dan Rudolph got ejected in the injury time the Rough Riders also had to fight Pioneer players and fans in a bench-clearing brawl.
