Rough Riders Week Ahead
June 30, 2004 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Long Island Rough Riders News Release
(Plainview, N.Y., June 30, 2004) â The Long Island Rough Riders will be on the road for two back-to-back games this weekend, facing two Northern Division opponents. On Saturday, July 3rd they will face the Western Mass Pioneers at Lusitano Stadium in Ludlow, MA, and on Sunday the local rival Westchester Flames at City Park Stadium New Rochelle, NY.
The Long Island Rough Riders, after upsetting the then 2nd ranked New Hampshire Phantoms (now 7-3-1) 2-1, currently hold a record of 2-7-1 (7 points). The recent player additions had an immediate impact: Defender Wilmer Cabrera, signed two weeks ago, was named "Player of the Match" by Head Coach Ronan Wiseman. Midfield addition Jim Rooney organized the game from the center, while outside midfielder Carlo Espinosa â both playing the first game for the Rough Riders â assisted on the first goal and scored the second one.
The Western Mass Pioneers (3-6-0, 9 points) are holding the spot ahead of the Rough Riders in the PSL standings. Head Coach Leszek Wrona's team, who beat the Rough Riders 3-1 back on May 1st in their season opener at home, has lost the last five games.
The Westchester Flames (5-3-2, 17 points), on the other hand, are the team ahead of the Western Mass Pioneers in the PSL. They have played the Rough Riders twice this season, resulting in one tie and one win. An important Flames asset is forward Evaud Thompson, who ranks 4th in points (19) within the PSL, accounting for eight goals in ten games this season.
Notes: Midfielder Shaun Higgins is anticipated to be able to play this weekend after three weeks on the bench due to a severe ankle sprain... Assistant Coach Paul Caffrey is going to be joining the team solidifying the defense, playing his first game this Saturday... The captain's band will now be worn by Midfielder Stephen Franzke. Head Coach Ronan Wiseman explained his decision: "Stephen (Franzke) is the right guy to lead the team at the moment. The change also allows Steve (Cadet) and Scott (Leber) to strictly focus on the field. Both are still important members of the team."
The Rough Riders will return home to face the Jersey Stallions on Wednesday, July 7th at 12noon. For further questions please contact Media Relations Manager Silke Repky at (516)671-1585 or at srepky@liroughriders.com.
