Rough Riders Week Ahead

June 9, 2004 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Long Island Rough Riders News Release

(Plainview, N.Y., June 9, 2004) - The Long Island Rough Riders will host the Wilmington Hammerheads this Friday, June 11. Kick-off is set for 7:30 pm at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, N.Y. The evening will also feature a pre-game parade by six Junior Rough Riders teams. Adidas will be giving away t-shirts to the first 500 Rough Riders fans.

After the first win of the season against the New Jersey Stallions on May 22, the Rough Riders felt they'd turned the corner. A stunning 3-2 loss against the Northern Virginia Royals the following week interrupted the momentum, and left the Rough Riders with a 1-4-1 record.

Facing the Hammerheads, Coach Ronan Wiseman said: "It's going to be a tough game. But as promised we are in the process of making some adjustments in the team. These additions will hopefully be in place for this weekend. I am positive that the adjustments will lead us to the winning track."

Forward Shaun Higgins is not anticipated to play this week due to an ankle sprain. Midfielder Colin Marshall will also be out since he is recovering from a concussion.

The team from Wilmington, N.C. is the defending PSL Champion. Last season Long Island was able to beat Wilmington by the identical score of 2-0. Currently at 3-2-1, they rank 2nd in the Southern Division of the PSL. Head Coach David Irving's (6th season) side has also had early season struggles.

The most effective Hammerheads player is Kenneth Bundy with two goals and three assists (7pts.). Meanwhile, Long Island forward Derrick Etienne ranks above him in the USL statistics with 8 points from four goals.
