Long Island Rough Riders News Release
Plainview, NY; October 13, 2005 - The Long Island Rough Riders youth program continues to impress not only national soccer elite, but also internationally, with the Rough Riders Super Y-League Developmental Under 12 Boys participating in several friendly matches in Italy.
Coached by Dion Oppolzer, the Rough Riders have already made their presence felt, with their first match resulting in an impressive 3-0 win over Italy's Santa Marinella Calcio. According to team representative Gary Schwartz, the game was "as international as a match can be. Both teams entered the field together, lined up at midfield and waved to the crowd after being introduced."
In their second friendly, the Rough Riders once again proved they could compete against the very best, defeating Urbetevere Football Club 1-0. "The defense stood out," said Schwartz. "Rough Rider goal keepers Matt Schwartz and Andres Montoya had little to do as the Urbetevere team only had 2 shots on goal."
Their first activity in Italy after arriving was attending a Pro training session at the Urbetevere Sport Centre with an Italian licensed coach. In their downtime, the team has toured the legendary attractions in Rome, including the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Colosseum and St. Peter's Basilica.
The Rough Riders will once again face Santa Marinella in their third friendly match on Thursday, October 13th at the Santa Marinella Sport Centre. On October 14th , Long Island will square off in their fourth game against Cassino Football Club at the Urbetevere Sport Centre, and their final match in Italy will have the Rough Riders taking on Totti Soccer Academy at the Francesco Totti Sport Centre on Saturday, October 15th.
