March 6, 2006 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Long Island Rough Riders News Release
PLAINVIEW, NY -- The Long Island Rough Riders have re-signed the club's two leading scorers from last year - forwards Moussa Sy (nine goals) and Derrick Etienne (nine goals). Also, returning to the Rough Riders after a one-year absence is midfielder/defender Darrell Etienne, twin brother of Derrick.
A native of Guinea, West Africa, the 26 year old Sy is returning for his fourth season with the Rough Riders. Last season, Sy scored nine goals and two assists in only 14 appearances. He was named the USL-2 Player of the Week twice during the 2005 campaign - Week #10 when he scored all four goals in the Rough Riders' 4-1 victory over Northern Virginia, and Week #12 for scoring twice during the team's "Camp Day" 5-2 win against New Hampshire. He also was named to the USL Second Division "Team of the Week" a third time for scoring twice in the team's 2-1 home win over Wilmington. He had previously played for the New York Freedom and attended Dowling College (1998-2000).
"Moussa is a great weapon for us on the field and we look forward to him bringing his fierce competitive spirit back to the Rough Riders this season," said Head Coach Flavio Ferri.
The 31 year-old Etienne twins, natives of Nyack, NY, are being reunited this season on the Rough Riders. Both had played at Virginia Commonwealth University for three years and then joined the Richmond Kickers (1998-2001).
Both brothers played an integral part of the Rough Riders 2002 Championship team. Derrick (pictured) scored the final's game-winning goal and earned MVP honors. His form carried over to the 2003 season when he was named to the All-League Team. He has been the team's leading scorer the past four seasons, including 11 goals in 2004 (18 appearances) and nine goals and two assists in 20 games last year. Darrell did not play during the 2005 season, but is looking to return to the form that earned him All-League honors while with Richmond. Both brothers have been members of the Haitian National Team since 2000.
Coach Ferri is pleased to be bringing back the pair. "Derrick and Darrell bring talent and leadership to the team. Their experience and work-rate will serve as an example to the younger players on the team."
The Rough Riders, with a 20-game regular season, will host 9 games at their home field at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, NY. Their 10th home date will be played at Stony Brook University on Wednesday-June 7, 2006. The team will open at home on April 22nd when they take on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
