Long Island Rough Riders News Release
(Plainview, N.Y., July 1, 2004) â The Long Island Rough Riders and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society are proud to announce that their first annual "Sand Soccer Tournament" raised $26,000 for the Long Island Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The two entities had joined forces to coordinate the tournament at Overlook Beach in Babylon on June 19th, 2004. All matches were played in inflatable soccer arenas provided by Quad Soccer. The day was a tremendous success, with the maximum capacity of 55 teams participating to enjoy soccer at the beach while helping fight cancer.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Campaign Manager Kim McCarthy, who had planned and organized the fundraiser with the support of the Rough Riders franchise, articulated the following after the final was over. "I am very happy with how the day went. Doing it for the first time, it totally exceeded my expectations."
The Long Island Rough Riders General Manager Jim Kilmeade commented. "Part of our responsibility as a local Long Island sports business is to be involved in worthwhile activities in the community. Our partnership with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the creation of the first annual Sand Soccer Tournament was a great success. But this is only the beginning for this great joint venture."
The success of the event has special meaning for the Rough Riders organization. Midfielder Jim Rooney, who lives in Florida with his wife and two children, has returned to Long Island to help support his brother who is fighting Lymphoma. Rooney rejoined the Rough Riders last week after playing five years in Major League Soccer.
