Long Island Rough Riders News Release
Plainview, NY (March 22, 2006) - The Long Island Rough Riders, members of professional soccer's USL 2nd Division, are pleased to announce the signing of local product Ricardo Ordain, a 2005 graduate of Long Island University. Rough Riders Head Coach Flavio Ferri has noted that "Ricardo has tremendous pace and a knack for the goal. We already know that he will be a headache for opposing defenses. We are extremely pleased to be bringing a local player back to the New York area to play with the Rough Riders."
Originally from Costa Rica, Ordain signs with the Rough Riders after playing for their division rival Charlotte Eagles during the 2005 season. Having joined Charlotte part way through their championship campaign, Ordain finished the year with 5 goals and 1 assist in only 11 appearances. In fact, he was named to the USL's "Team of the Week" after scoring two goals in his first professional start during Charlotte's 3-0 victory over the Rough Riders back on July 30th.
Ordain earned 1st Team All-Northeast Conference and All-New York Region honors his senior year at Long Island University. He helped LIU earn it's first NEC title since 1997 and it's first NCAA playoff berth since 1986. He was named the school's "Male Athlete of the Year" for his contributions to both their soccer and track & field squads. He was also part of the men's 1600m team that set a new school record last spring. He attended LIU only one year, after transferring from league-rival St. Francis.
The Rough Riders, with a 20-game regular season, will host 9 games at their home field at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, NY. Their 10th home date will be played at Stony Brook University on Wednesday-June 7, 2006. The team will open at home on April 22nd - "Adidas Night" - when they take on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
