Joliet JackHammers News Release

JOLIET, IL – Peter Edward Rose, Jr., a Northern League mid-season All-Star third baseman in 2003, will return for his second season with the Joliet JackHammers. The JackHammers open their third season at 7:05 PM on Thursday, May 20 versus the Gary (IN) SouthShore RailCats at Silver Cross Field in Joliet's City Center.

Last season, Rose played in 78 JackHammers games. He batted .260 (74-for-285) with four home runs, eight doubles, 29 runs scored, 35 strikeouts, 38 RBI and 42 walks. Even though he did not play a full Northern League season, Rose ranked fifth in walks. In the field, Rose was nearly flawless. He made just four errors in 402 total chances including a pair in 38 games (.994 fielding percentage) as a first baseman and a couple in 32 games (.975 fielding percentage) as a third baseman.

At last season's mid-season All-Star Skills Competition in Lincoln, NE, Rose was the home run derby champion. He can defend that title at this year's skills competition to be held at Silver Cross Field on July 19. He also was last year's starting third baseman in the league's All-Star Game. The 2004 Northern League All-Star Game presented by Budweiser is July 20 at Silver Cross Field.

In 1997, Rose played 11 games in the major leagues for the Cincinnati Reds. Through 1,404 games in 18 minor league cities dating back to his first pro season of 1989, Rose has a minor league career batting average of .264 (1,310-for-4,968) with 30 triples, 100 home runs, 252 doubles, 522 walks, 611 strikeouts, 649 runs scored and 706 RBI.

Originally, the Baltimore Orioles drafted Rose in the 12th round of the 1988 June draft out of Oak Hills High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. One of the more notable transactions in Rose's career was on March 31, 1991 when the Baltimore Orioles traded Rose to the Chicago White Sox for right-handed pitcher Joe Borowski, the current Chicago Cub. When that trade occurred, Roland Hemond was the Orioles General Manager and Ron Schueler was the Sox GM.

Rose stands 6'2" and weighs 235 pounds. Rose bats left-handed and throws right-handed. He was born on November 16, 1969 (34 years old) in Cincinnati where he also currently resides. Read more about Rose on the roster page of the JackHammers website.

"We are very excited to have Pete back with the club. Not only does he provide us with a solid bat in the middle of the lineup, but he is a leader on and off the field. He has the ability to play first or third. Pete is a great example of playing the game hard. He plays the game the right way, day in, day out, and he loves the fans of Joliet," said JackHammers third-year coach Mike Pinto who is also the team's player development coordinator.

The JackHammers have full season tickets, mini-plans ticket packages, group ticket packages, team merchandise and gift certificates available for purchase. An early bird date to purchase individual game tickets will be revealed in a future team e-mail newsletter.
