Roots Fall to 2020 Eastern Conference Champion Rowdies on the Road

September 3, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL) - Oakland Roots News Release

Roots traveled to Florida this week for their third interdivisional game of the season, this time against 2020 Eastern Conference Champion Tampa Bay Rowdies. After a pregame storm, the match was underway. Tampa Bay dominated possession early and held it for most of the first half. Goalkeeper Taylor Bailey saw his first start in over a month and was put to work early. Tampa had a total of 15 shots in the first half with seven of them on target. Bailey made save after save until the Rowdie's captain Sebastián Guenzatti found the back of the net in the 30th minute off a second-chance ball from a free kick. Tampa Bay continued with their offensive pressure, scoring again in the 41st minute and bringing a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Head Coach Jordan Ferrell made three substitutions to start the half to get some fresh legs in on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Tampa Bay continued to control possession for much of the second half, although they did not have as much offensive pressure as the first. It wasn't until the 82nd minute that they added to the scorecard with a goal from Lucky Mkosana, who came on late in the game. Outside of Taylor Bailey's performance in goal, another bright spot of the game was seeing Tarek Morad make his way back onto the field for the first time since early August.

Roots will head back west with a stop in Las Vegas to face Lights FC on Wednesday, September 8th before returning to Laney for Pride Night on September 11th as they play host to San Diego Loyal.
