Rome Drops Wild Home Opener 14-8 to Charleston

Rome, GA - The Rome Braves and Charleston Riverdogs squared off in game one of a four game series. A total of 22 runs (12 unearned), 23 hits, and seven errors later Charleston got the upper hand by a final score of 14-8 before a home opening crowd of 3,301.

Charleston scored three runs in the first inning but Rome bounced back to make it a 4-3 game in the bottom of the inning. With Anfernee Seymour at third and Derian Cruz at first, Rome plated their first run on a double steel when Seymour crossed the plate from third. Juan Yepez singled home Cruz and later Cristian Pache scored on a force out for the 3-0 score. The fourth run of the inning came courtesy of a Randy Ventura RBI single. Rome added three more runs in the second on an RBI groundout by Cruz, a throwing error and a balk plus another run in the third on Cruz's run scoring single giving the Braves an 8-3 advantage. Charleston got right back in the game with two runs in the fourth and two in the sixth closing the gap to 8-7.

In the eighth inning, the Riverdogs took the lead when Brandon Wagner lofted a sacrifice fly to tie the game, Estevan Florial scored on a fielding error and Hoy Jun Park cracked a two run double giving Charleston a 12-8 advantage. The Riverdogs added two runs in the ninth for the 14-8 final.

Philip Diel (2-0) picks up the win for Charleston while Matt Custred (0-1) is tagged with the loss for Rome.
