Rogues Out-Hit Gems But Drop Game Two
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - The Medford Rogues (5-5) lost to the Klamath Falls Gems (4-6) 9-6 on Friday evening at Kiger Stadium in Game Two of the Southern Oregon Showdown.
Catcher Johnny Hawk (Iowa Western) got the hitting started for the Rogues in the second inning with a two out single. He then stole second on a wild pitch, and scored off the bat of right fielder Kody Garvin (Lewis-Clark State), who singled to left field.
The Gems took the lead in the bottom of the second when Tim Frith hit a two run home run to score Travis Danielson.
Left fielder Brandon Bena (Iowa Western) homered with two outs in the third to tie the game at 2-2.
The Gems answered back with four runs in the bottom of the third. A couple of tough luck bounces out of the glove of shortstop Riley Way (Lewis-Clark State) allowed extra runners aboard, with most of the damage coming off a bases clearing double by Danielson.
Hawk walked in the fourth inning and then stole a base while Gems starting pitcher Brooks Juhasz (pronounced You-Haaz) had his back turned.
For the second time in the Garvin drove home Hawk, this time on a double to left field. Klamath native and Rogues second baseman Chase Fernlund (Feather River) then hit a frozen roped double down the left field line to score Garvin.
Garvin wasn't done hitting. He hit solo home run to straight away centerfield in the sixth, but the Gems answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.
In the eighth, Gems catcher Miles Harris hit a two-run home run to put the Gems up by four.
In the top the ninth, the Rogues started to rally. Been lead off with an RBI double, and then Mitch Neunborn (North Iowa Area CC) singled to put runners on the corners. An RBI sac fly by Hawk scored Bena, but Rogues failed to get any more across.
Gems starting shortstop Brice Foster pitched the eighth and ninth innings and earned the save.
Kody Garvin went 4-4 with three RBI and two extra base hits.
The Rogues finished with 11 hits, compared to the Gems nine.
The announced attendance at Kiger stadium was 863.
The Rogues will play the final game of the three game series against the Gems on Saturday, June 8th. First pitch is at 6:35pm.
The Rogues will return home on Sunday, June 10th for Country Night against the same Klamath Falls Gems, featuring a post-game concert by Fogline. It is also a Fred Meyer Family Fun Sunday.
