
Rogers CFL Outstanding Player Award Winners Announced

Ottawa, Ontario â The Canadian Football League today announced the Rogers CFL Outstanding Player Award Winners. Winners were selected by 45 voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) plus 10 other broadcast media. For this ballot, voters were asked to select players from Divisional award nominees to represent their club and their division as a Rogers CFL Outstanding Player. Please note: awards were tallied based on 42 of 55 respondents who submitted their selections by ballot deadline. Some ballots were incomplete and/or spoiled.
CFL Outstanding Player
Casey Printers of the BC Lions was one of the standout quarterbacks in the Canadian Football League in 2004. Printers was at the top of many categories including pass completion percentage (65.8%), average gain (10.3), passing touchdowns (35) and touchdown percentage (7.1%). Printers finished the season with the highest pass efficiency rating in the league (115.0).
Printers received 22 first place ballots.
CFL Outstanding Canadian
Jason Clermont of the BC Lions has been named the CFL's Outstanding Canadian for the 2004 CFL season. Clermont played with the University of Regina Rams and was 2002's Rogers CFL Outstanding Rookie of the Year. He finished third in pass receptions with 83 and had 1,220 combined yards in the 2004 regular season.
Clermont received 28 first place ballots.
CFL Outstanding Defensive Player
Anwar Stewart of the Montreal Alouettes is at the heart of a strong Montreal defence. In 2004, Stewart was first on his team and fifth in the League in quarterback sacks with nine. He also had four interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. His 2004 stats include 21 tackles, four special teams tackles, and 11 pass knockdowns.
Stewart received 24 first place ballots.
CFL Outstanding Lineman
Gene Makowsky of the Saskatchewan Roughriders is a first time winner in this category after last being selected as a Roughrider nominee in 2002. In his 10th CFL season, Makowsky started 18 games at right tackle for the âRiders.
Makowsky received 22 first place ballots.
CFL Outstanding Rookie
Nikolas Lewis of the Calgary Stampeders made his presence known in the CFL in 2004. In his first season, the youngest player on the Stampeders led his team in receptions (72), receiving yards (1,045), touchdowns (8), yards from scrimmage (1,045) and punt return yards (385).
Lewis received 25 first place ballots.
CFL Outstanding Special Teams Player
Keith Stokes of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers was acquired from Montreal in January 2004 and made himself an integral part of the Bombers' offence and special teams units. Stokes led the League in punt returns, finishing with 80 returns for 949 yards and four touchdowns. He was also first in kickoff returns with 56 returns for 1,112 yards and one touchdown.
Stokes received 41 first place ballots.
Commissioner's Award/Tom Pate Award
Russ Jackson is the recipient of the Commissioner's Award for his outstanding contribution to amateur football.
Barron Miles of the Montreal Alouettes has been awarded the Tom Pate Award for outstanding contributions to the League, his team and his community. This award is voted on by the CFLPA.
Rogers Fans' Choice
After more than 25,000 votes, there are two winners for the Rogers Fans' Choice award. Montreal's Anthony Calvillo and Hamilton's Danny McManus finished neck-in-neck to share the honour of garnering the most votes amongst fans that logged on to CFL.ca or text messaged their votes during the 2004 season. The Rogers Player of the Game received 15 points toward his annual total. The second place player received 10 points and the third place player received 5 points. Points were awarded following each CFL on TSN broadcast.
