Jersey Rockhoppers News Release
Sunday evening at the Essex County Richard J. Codey Arena at South Mountain in West Orange, NJ, the Rockhoppers used a balanced attack to win their second straight game, beating the Danbury Mad Hatters 5-4. Jersey got off to a fast start, scoring three times in the game's opening period. John Morea scored his 5th goal of the season on a pass from Mike Bouchard. Just over a minute later, Tom Boudreau added to his league-leading goal total, taking a Drew Sanders pass and putting it past Derek MacIntyre to give the Rockhoppers a 2-0 advantage. After a Matt Cosmos interference penalty put Jersey on the power play, Anthony Becker found Matt Puntureri in front of the net, and the Rockhoppers went into the second period with a 3-0 advantage. However, the second period belonged to Danbury, as they notched three goals of their own, starting with Scott Horvath's 12th of the season. The Hatters took advantage of a Pat Serpico tripping penalty to pull one goal closer. Anthony Becker extended Jersey's lead on a pass from Dustin Henning. Then newcomer Zach Klann scored his first goal in a Hatters uniform, and cut the deficit to 4-3 heading into the third period.
For the second straight night, goalie Nick Niedert anchored the Rockhoppers defensive effort. On Sunday he stopped 53 of Danbury's 57 shots on goal. Midway through the third, Becker put in his second goal of the night giving the Rockhoppers a two lead. Danbury kept fighting, but the Rockhoppers were able to kill a late penalty to hang on for the win. Jersey now holds a seven point lead over Danbury with six games to play (Danbury has 8 games remaining).
Jersey is back in action on Friday March 13th against the Brooklyn Aces at the Aviator Arena in Brooklyn at 7:30pm before returning home on Sunday to face the Aces at 5:30pm. For more information or to order tickets visit www.JerseyRockhoppers.com or call 973-713-7547.
