Rocket Very Pleased With Draft

June 12, 2012 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
P.E.I. Rocket News Release

The PEI Rocket are back to business at home after spending 5 days in Quebec City for league meetings and what they consider to be a very successful draft. Meetings started Wednesday morning with the two main areas of focus being marketing and hockey operations.

The pinnacle of the week was obviously the draft Saturday and the Rocket are very pleased with the quality and quantity of players they drafted. Team officials believe they came away with a mix of guys that can step into the line-up and make a difference next year, as well as depth for the future. The team selected 15 players over the 14 rounds and they also traded a ninth round pick for 20 year old defenseman, Owen Werthner.

Rocket coach, Gordie Dwyer, says, "Every year, you leave the draft feeling confident but this year has a special feel. In Alexis Pepin, we think we got the best player in the draft. Scouts and management from other teams, as well as agents with no connection to Alexis, were telling us this all week as well. He is a big kid with lots of skill, speed, determination and grit. Fans are going to enjoy coming to the rink to watch him. We also feel fortunate to have gotten Mark Trickett and Kevin Laliberte where we got them as well. It is not often that you get the 3 guys you targeted with your first three picks. There will be guys taken after these three that will certainly compete for spots next year as well."

Training camp opens August 13 at the Pownal Sports Center. All players are expected to attend.

Dwyer Joins Montreal Canadiens Prospects Camp

Coach Gordie Dwyer leaves today to join the Montreal Canadiens 2012-13 Prospects Camp. He was invited by Trevor Timmons, the Canadiens Director of Player Development, to join the camp as a guest coach and observer. The 4 day camp opens tomorrow and runs through Saturday. PEI's Morgan Ellis, Louis Leblanc who played 42 games with Habs last year, and Nathan Beaulieu will be three of the players at the camp.

Friday is the Final Day for Extra Early Bird Draw

The Rocket remind everyone that this coming Friday is the final day to purchase Season Tickets for Extra Early Bird Draw eligibility. Tickets can be purchased in the office, by phone (892-7349) or through the Rocket website (www.peirocket.com).
