CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Led by a complete team performance, the Rochester Rattlers won their first Major League Lacrosse title with a 16-6 victory over the Denver Outlaws in the NB ZIP MLL Championship Game at Harvard Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Midfielder Joe Walters was named as the Bud Light Championship Weekend MVP after scoring six goals with five assists in the two games. He scored two goals with two assists in the championship game after a four-goal, three-assist effort on Saturday against Philadelphia.
Attackman Jeff Zywicki led the Rattlers to the victory with six goals, including four in the second half, as Rochester outscored Denver by a 10-1 margin after the intermission. The Outlaws were held scoreless for the first 28:15 of the second half before Matt Brown converted a feed from Ryan Powell past Rochester Goalkeeper Brett Queener. Queener, who played the entire second half for the Rattlers, made 10 saves and even recorded an assist on Zywicki's fifth goal of the game.
Attackman John Grant, Jr., the two-time Warrior Offensive Player of the Year and Bud Light MLL MVP, scored four goals and an assist in the victory for Rochester, which became the first U.S. city to win a lacrosse championship in three different leagues.
Powell led the Outlaws in the loss, scoring a goal with two assists, while Brian Langtry added a two-point marker. Goalkeeper Jesse Schwartzman made 13 saves in a losing effort.
It was the first-ever postseason meeting between the two teams. Rochester also defeated Denver in a regular season meeting last year at INVESCO Field at Mile High.
