Rochester Rhinos News Release
(Rochester, NY)... After a successful two-game road trip last weekend, the Rochester Rhinos are gearing up for two of the biggest games of the season this weekend. The home-and-home series against major rivals the Montreal Impact starts this Friday, July 25 at 8:00 p.m. at PAETEC Park. The Rhinos then hit the road for a 3:30 p.m. Sunday matinee in Montreal on July 27th.
Rochester entered last weekend in ninth place, but the 3-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders on Friday night and the 1-0 victory over the Minnesota Thunder on Sunday shot the Rhinos into third place in the USL First Division. The six-point weekend sets Rochester's record at 6-5-6 with 24 points, only six points behind the first place Charleston Battery. The Rhinos have lost only one game in the months of June and July, obtaining all six of their wins in the process. Goalkeeper Scott Vallow improved his goals against average to 0.941 while allowing only two goals this month.
Rochester's meetings with Montreal this weekend are the first and second times the two clubs have met this season. The two last faced each other on September 8, 2007 in front of a crowd of 12,448 at PAETEC Park. Rochester topped the impact with a 2-0 win thanks to the second-half goals from Rey Martinez and Matthew Delicâte. Montreal currently sits in 10th place with a 5-8-3 record after a 3-1 win over Miami last Friday.
Friday's match against the Impact will be televised live on the Fox Soccer Channel (Time Warner Cable Channel 212).
Fans are invited to bring a get-well card for Abby Wambach to Friday's game. The Pittsford native broke her left leg in a game last Wednesday, taking her out of the competition for the Olympics in Beijing, which begin on August 6th. Cards can be left at the Guest Services area and will be mailed directly to Wambach while she recovers.
The Rochester Rhinos (W) closed out the 2008 regular season last weekend at PAETEC Park. The club faced a tough 6-1 loss to the Laval Comets on Saturday, July 19th. The season ended on a high note with a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Lady Lynx on Sunday, July 20th. These matches concluded the season as the Rhinos' (W) respectable 6-6-2 record was not enough to qualify for a playoff seed.
