Rochester Lancers Fall in Opener 16-10

(Syracuse, NY) - The Rochester Lancers (0-1) dropped their 2012-13 season opener to the Syracuse Silver Knights (1-1) at the OnCenter in Syracuse by a 16-10 score on Saturday.

After a back and forth first half that saw Syracuse take a 5-4 lead into the break on two goals from Matt Clare, the Lancers burst out of the gates to start the second half, rattling off ten straight points to take a 10-5 lead. The early onslaught began just 13 seconds into the second stanza as Rochester had taken the lead on a goal by Rey Martinez, followed by two consecutive goals from set pieces, both by Mauricio Salles, quieting the crowd in the OnCenter.

Following a timeout by Syracuse Head Coach Tommy Tanner, the Knights regained their composure, only to score eleven straight points to end the game. They started their comeback with a 3-point goal by Nelson Santana that threaded its way into the bottom-left corner of the net. Syracuse followed up that strike with a goal by Darren Toby, set up by Ryan Mack to tied the game 10-10 at the end of the third quarter.

They home crowd was rewarded with a goal early in the fourth quarter by Slavisa Ubiparipovic who scored on a back-heel from close range after two quick passes found him in front of the net.  The loss spoiled the debut of new Lancers head coach and Syracuse native Jim Hesch.

Rochester's Mauricio Salles led the Lancers offensively with two free kick goals and an assist for five points. Veteran forward Doug Miller, newcomer Garret Pettis, and Rey "Boom Boom" Martinez scored the other goals for the Lancers.

Syracuse was led offensively by Matt Clare and Nelson Santana who scored two goals apiece.

The Lancers will return home to prepare for the home opener on Saturday, November 10th at the Blue Cross Arena. The club will host the Chicago Soul FC beginning at 7:00 p.m. All matches can heard live on the Lancers flagship station Fickle 93.3 FM with veteran broadcaster Joe Giuliano once again calling all of the action.
