Rochester Hosts Pittsburgh in Home Finale
August 9, 2013 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Rochester Rhinos News Release
The Rochester Rhinos host the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in their final home match of the 2013 USL PRO season on Friday, August 9th at 7:35PM.
It has been a trying season for the Rhinos, but most of their success has come at home in Sahlen's Stadium. Rochester had a ten match home unbeaten streak from May 31st to July 28th ended last Friday night in a 1:3 loss to the Dayton Dutch Lions in a match that was abandoned due to lightning in the 67th minute. The Rhinos have taken 16 of their 22 points at home this season.
Rochester has only conceded 13 goals in 13 home matches this season. 2012 USL PRO Goalkeeper of the Year Kristian Nicht and 2012 USL PRO Defender of the Year Troy Roberts anchor the Rhinos back four, but 24 year-old left back Danny Earls has become an unsung hero of Rochester's defense. Earls joined the Rhinos from Aston Villa's youth academy in 2008, and he played in Rochester for two seasons before joining the Colorado Rapids (MLS) in 2010. After two seasons in MLS Earls rejoined the Rhinos in 2012. This season he has played in and started in 21 of the Rhinos 23 matches and logged over 1,800 minutes this season. Earls has also been able to get forward into the attack from left back and he has two goals and one assist. Earls has played 6,925 minutes in 86 matches during his four year Rhinos career. He has five goals and eight assists.
Pittsburgh enters Friday night's match as one of three teams on 34 points, and they are currently in the eighth and final playoff spot in the USL PRO table. Striker Jose Angulo is second in the league in goals (12), second in shots (62), and third in points (27). Midfielder Matthew Dallman leads USL PRO in assists with 12. Former Rochester Rhinos defender Rich Costanzo is the Riverhounds captain. He was named USL PRO Player of the Week last week after he scored the game-winning goal against VSI Tampa Bay FC, and anchored Pittsburgh's defense in a 1:0 shutout victory over Orlando City.
The Rochester Rhinos close out there 2013 USL PRO season on the road in Phoenix on Friday, August 16th and Los Angeles on Saturday, August 17th.
