Boston, MA â Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premiere professional outdoor lacrosse league, today announced the 20-man protected lists submitted by each of its six teams.
Each organization retains the rights to the players it protected, while all other players will become part of the League Player Pool. These players, plus other members of the League Player Pool, are eligible to be selected in the 2005 Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft. The 2005 Supplemental Draft will take place in January.
The Rochester Rattlers retained notable players like All-MLL attackman Ryan Powell and defenseman John Glatzel, as well as high-scoring attackman Casey Powell and goalie Tillman Johnson. John Grant Jr. and Marshall Abrams were also protected after missing the 2004 season due to injury.
Key players retained by each squad, as well as players protected that did not play in 2004, include:
Baltimore â Protected All-MLL attackman Mark Millon, midfielder Gary Gait, and midfielder Paul Cantabene. Hugh Donovan, who played for the Bayhawks in 2001 and 2002, and Mike Powell, the first overall selection in the 2004 Collegiate Draft, were also listed by Baltimore.
Boston â Bud Light Season MVP Conor Gill and Warrior Most Improved Player Kevin Leveille were retained, as was 2003 Warrior Defensive Player of the Year Ryan Curtis. The team that earned the MLL's best regular season record also protected key contributors Mike Battista, David Evans, Peter Inge, and Michael Watson.
Long Island â 2003 Bud Light Season MVP Jay Jalbert and 2003 Warrior Goalie of the Year Brian Dougherty were protected by the Lizards. The squad also held on to Collegiate Draft choices Steve Berger (2004, fifth round) and Kevin Brennan (2003, fourth round), and 7-man Practice Squad member Frank D'Agostino.
New Jersey â Jesse Hubbard, the MLL record holder for career goals, was protected along with 2003 Cascade Rookie of the Year Adam Doneger and promising youngster Walid Hajj. Peter Jacobs, who missed the 2004 season due to injury, and 2004 second-round Supplemental Draft selection Mike Law were also retained.
Philadelphia â The defending MLL champs protected award winners Ryan Boyle (Cascade Rookie of the Year), Greg Cattrano (Warrior Goalie of the Year), Blake Miller (Warrior Offensive Player of the Year), and Nicky Polanco (Warrior Defensive Player of the Year). 2004 Collegiate Draft selection Greg Bice was also listed.
During the 2004 season, each team had a 23-man active roster and carried up to seven players on the practice squad. By submitting their protected lists, the six MLL teams trimmed their rosters to their twenty named players. The roster limit will remain at twenty players until the 2005 Supplemental Draft. In the interim, teams may not select players from the League Player Pool, but they can waive players and make trades.
The 2005 Supplemental will consist of 15 rounds, bringing team rosters to 35 players. Squads will enter training camps with the expanded rosters, trimming them to 30 players one week before the season opens. Prior to the first game, each organization will be required to name the 23 members of its active roster and up to seven players for the practice squad.
