January 2, 2009 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Topeka Pilots News Release
The Topeka Roadrunners started off 2009 the same way 2008 ended just 48 hours earlier with a win over the visiting Springfield Jr. Blues. The three game series will finish up Saturday night at Landon Arena with a 7:05pm puck drop.
It was a slow start for both teams, with the first goal coming off the stick of Alec Hagaman at the 12:36 mark with help from Bryon Paulazzo and Randy Swank. The Jr. Blues were quick to tie up the score one minute later. However it would be the last time that the Jr Blues would find the back of the net.
The first half of the second period was an even exchange between the two teams with no penalties and the first score not coming until 9:29 from Randy Swank. Steve Shafer and Bryon Paulazzo would again be there for the assist. Travis Stevens was able to put the RoadRunners up 3-1 just three minutes later with the help from Caleb Wolfgram and Ross Trousdale.
Jordan George made the fourth âRunner to light the lamp with as many goals at the 4:32 mark in the third period. Newcomer to Topeka Andy Inderieden would help as would Bryon Paulazzo who was able to pull off the playmaker for the night. The two teams would continue on in the third period trading penalties with neither team able to capitalize on the man advantage. In all 44 minutes were spent in the box by the two teams over 19 penalties with no power play goals.
Bryce Merriam was able to turn away 26 of 27 shots on goal. Topeka also won the battle on shots with 29.
