
Road-Tested Riptide Down Hurricanes in Halifax

HALIFAX, N.S. - The Saint John Riptide improved to 6-5 on the road, downing the Halifax Hurricanes 95-78 Saturday night in National Basketball League of Canada action.
It was another big night for Riptide centre T.J. Maston, who exploded for a season-high 35 points and 14 rebounds. Frank Bartley added 24 in the win, which improved Saint John's overall record to 7-14. Marvin Binney chipped in with 11 points.
Saint John shot 45 per cent from the field, including going 9-19 from beyond the three-point arc. They also shot 16-18 from the free-throw line. Maston connected on 9-10 from the charity stripe.
Terry Thomas led the Hurricanes with 17 points while Terry Poole scored 15. Halifax, which fell to 11-11, shot 41 per cent from the field, but connected on just 4-25 three-point attempts, and 6-19 free throws.
The Riptide led 69-61 after three quarters, stretching their 48-41 halftime lead by the smallest of margins. The 'Tide opened strong, taking a 28-17 advantage after one quarter.
Saint John travels down Highway 1 on Tuesday to take on their provincial rivals, the Moncton Magic, in a 7 p.m. start. Feb. 3 they are in Charlottetown to face the Island Storm.
Feb. 6, the Magic are at Harbour Station to face Saint John, and on Feb. 8 the Storm are in town to take on the Riptide. Both games are 7 p.m. starts.
