Camden Riversharks News Release

The Camden Riversharks defeated the Long Island Ducks today, by a final score of 5-3. Camden pitcher Ryan DiPietro (2-6) picked up the win, as he gave up just 3 runs in 6.2 innings of work. Long Island's Josue Matos (0-2) suffered the loss, as he allowed 4 runs and 7 hits in 4 innings. With the win, the Riversharks' season tally improves to 7-15, while the Ducks' falls to 12-10.

As they did in the first game of this series, the Riversharks jumped out to an early lead in this contest. Center fielder Wayne Lydon led off by picking up his league leading ninth triple of the season, a line drive that landed in the right field corner. Two batters later, designated hitter Jose Leon hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Lydon and giving the Sharks a quick 1-0 lead.

The Ducks answered back in the 3rd inning and took a 2-1lead, courtesy of virtually identical back-to-back plays. After a one out single by third baseman Matt Cavagnaro, Lew Ford lined an RBI double down the left field line. The very next batter was second baseman Ray Navarrete, who hit the ball in the exact same spot as Ford, driving in the second run of the inning, and giving Long Island the lead.

Camden managed to tie the game at 3-3 in the 3rd inning, courtesy of some crafty base running by Lydon. After safely reaching base with a slow rolling infield single, Lydon stole second base and then advanced to third when Cavagnaro's pitch out throw sailed into center field. The next batter was right fielder Chris Walker, who notched a sacrifice fly to center field, picking up his 37th RBI of the year.

The seesaw ride continued in the 4th inning, as the Sharks scored two more runs and took the lead once again. An RBI double by catcher John Purdom plated Brian Burgamy, and gave Camden a one run lead. The next batter was Lydon, who continued to have the hot bat, as he picked up his third hit of the game, an RBI single that scored Purdom and made the score 4-2 in favor of the home team.

Long Island cut into Camden's lead in the 5th, and made it a one run game. A sacrifice fly by Victor Rodriguez scored Ford, and made the score 4-3. But the Riversharks took the run back the following inning, as a base hit by Purdom once again scored Burgamy.

With a two run lead heading into the 9th inning, the Riversharks put the ball in the hands of closer Chris Shaver, who retired the side in order, and picked up his second save of the year in the process.

The Riversharks and Ducks will wrap up their three game series tomorrow at 1:05pm. Right handed pitcher Kevin Mannix (1-0, 4.75) will take the mound for Camden, and be opposed by righty BJ LaMura (6-6, 4.82) from Long Island. Limited seating for the game is still available.
