Augusta RiverHawks News Release
After the trials of a few days of training camp, the RiverHawks' squad hit the road to Columbus, GA for the first of two exhibition games this weekend.
The first period seemed to be somewhat docile until Jason Price dropped the gloves with Alex MacLeod of Columbus after MacLeod was charged with an elbowing penalty against RiverHawks' captain Matt Auffrey. Despite 15 shots on goal for Augusta and 10 for the Cottonmouths, neither team was able to score as netminders Alex Beaudry (Augusta) and Ian Vigier (Columbus) effectively turned away each shot that journeyed near them.
The RiverHawks' came out firing early in the second period, peppering Vigier with seven shots within the first four minutes of play. Augusta finally broke through with a goal from Yuri Bouharevich with the help of Dennis Sicard and Branden Kosolofsky at 12:54. RiverHawks' Head Coach Rob Miller elected to substitute goaltender Beadry with Robby Moss after he faced 17 shots with no goals allowed. It would take nearly six minutes, but Columbus answered with a tally from Jonathan Redlick with just over six minutes remaining in the stanza. Sicard and Andrew Adams would record the second fight of the night before the period was over. After two, the teams stood at 1-1.
As the final period of regulation began, both teams still had jerseys in the box, but neither goaltender submitted. Andrew Loewen would start the third in place of Vigier for the Cottonmouths. Mid-way through the period, Chad Ziegler would regain the lead for Augusta. Gaining the assist on the goal was Matt Atsoff. A few minutes later, Kyle Johnson found his way around Moss, thus receiving credit for Columbus' equalizer with just over three minutes left. Neither team would find the back of the net before the buzzer, resulting in a 2-2 tie and overtime hockey.
Five minutes of overtime would not prove to be enough for the teams, resulting in a shootout. It would take five shooters each to decide the victor, but the last shooter for the 'Hawks, Bouharevich, would come through again and produce the game-winner. Final score, 3-2 RiverHawks.
The RiverHawks will travel to Fayetteville, NC tomorrow to faceoff against the FireAntz for their final pre-season game. Puck drop is set for 7:30PM and the game is slated to be available on both the online broadcast via America One and on Pointstreak.com.
The RiverHawks' open at home on November 2 & 3 on the Phoenix HVCR Ice at the James Brown Arena. Both games will begin at 7:35PM.
