Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks announced today that they have signed defenseman Tyler Howe and forward Brendan Taylor. To make room on the roster the RiverHawks have released defensemen Nick Wheeler and Sean Stagles.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Howe has the ability to play both forward and defense. The Wareham, MA native will be starting his rookie season, after having spent two seasons in the Quebec Major Junior League. In 71 games in one of the premier junior leagues in the world Howe racked up seven points and 137 penalty minutes.
"Tyler brings an element of toughness that much needed," said RiverHawks' Head Coach Brad Ralph. "He is a young kid that is excited to be here, and we're excited to have him. We're looking forward to seeing him in action this Thursday."
In Taylor the RiverHawks have added a dash of skill to the lineup, as he has posted solid offensive numbers everywhere he has played. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound rookie played in eight games last season with Wilfrid Laurier University, his only year at the school. Prior to his college stint, Taylor put up 54 points in 36 games split between the Maritime Junior Hockey League and the Ontario Junior Hockey Legaue.
"Brendan is a very skilled center-man," said Ralph. " He spent time with the Tulsa Oilers at training camp and played on a line with Dustin Cloutier. They were very successful camp and were one of the top scoring lines there. We're looking to him to help on the power play and put pucks in the net.
Prior to 2009 the Oakville, ON native spent time in the Ontario Hockey League, another one of the top junior leagues in the world, and posted 16 goals and 50 points in 120 games.
Both players will be in the RiverHawks' lineup this week.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Thursday, January 5th as they play the Huntsville Havoc. The puck drops at 7:35pm. Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office.
