Augusta RiverHawks News Release

The Augusta RiverHawks put up a valiant effort in their first ever regular season game in Fayetteville, NC Thursday night, but were edged by the FireAntz 2-1. The RiverHawks outshot their opponents 38-25 at the Crown Coliseum, but the FireAntz enjoyed a great performance from goaltender Adam Avramenko to pull out the victory.

"I thought we played really well," said RiverHawks' Head Coach Brad Ralph. "We had our chances throughout the game and got great goaltending from Jordan McLaughlin. At the end of the day we just did not convert our chances on the power play, but that will come. If we get an effort like that every night, we will be in good shape."

The RiverHawks got off to a great start as forward Lucas Labelle secured his place in Augusta hockey history with the franchise's first ever goal just past the five minute mark of the first period.

Just over three minutes later FireAntz' forward Cody Zubko evened the affair firing a shot past RiverHawks goaltender McLaughlin unassisted.

The RiverHawks pressed hard in the second period firing 17 shots at Avramenko, but it was the FireAntz who took the lead as Zubko scored his second and eventual game winner.

Avramenko continued to star in the third period turning away 13 more RiverHawks attempts.

The RiverHawks' inaugural season will begin with a weekend extravaganza October 22nd and 23rd. Information on tickets for the 2010-11 season are available by visiting www.augustariverhawks.com or by calling 706-993-4267.
