RiverHawks Make It 10 Straight with 6-2 Win
March 24, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks used a second period offensive outburst to propel them to their tenth straight win, just two short of the Southern Professional Hockey League record. Forward Branden Kosolofsky starred for the RiverHawks with two goals and two assists, and Captain Matt Auffrey scored a goal and two assists to put him just three points back of Fayetteville FireAntz' forward Chris Leveille in the race for the SPHL's scoring title.
The win puts the RiverHawks two points back of the Mississippi Surge in the race for first place in the SPHL. The first playoff seed plays the sixth seed in a best-of-five series for the right to go straight to the President's Cup Championship, as opposed to having to play in two best-of-three series to reach the finals.
The RiverHawks opened the scoring in the first period when they generated an Ice Bears turnover in the neutral zone. Neil Graham picked up the loose puck and fired a pass to Jim Gehring who beat Ice Bears' goaltender Thomas Lee on a breakaway.
The Ice Bears managed to tie the game on a huge blast from defenseman Dan Mercer. Mercer kept the puck in at the blue line and let loose a slap shot that beat the screened RiverHawks' goaltender Jon Olthuis.
Knoxville managed to tie the game early in the second period when Brett Valiquette deflected a point shot from Martin Kubaliak into the back of the net. However, the RiverHawks would roar back with three unanswered goals. Kosolofsky, Neil Graham, and Travis Dunstall would all beat Lee to give the RiverHawks a two-goal lead.
The RiverHawks put the game even further out of reach with a goal from Kosolofsky and Auffrey.
RiverHawks' goaltender Jon Olthuis picked up the win stopping 25 shots.
The RiverHawks are back in action at the James Brown Arena Friday, March 25 th as they face the Columbus Cottonmouths. It's the final regular season game for the RiverHawks. The puck drops at 7:30pm. Tickets are available at the James Brown Arena Box Office, by calling 1-877-4AUGTIX, or by visiting www.georgialinatix.com.
