Cincinnati Riverhawks News Release

Cincinnati, Ohio (May 6, 2002) The Cincinnati Riverhawks opened their season Saturday night against the Milwaukee Rampage in front of 941 people at Sycamore High School. The game was for the Open Cup qualification and both teams were looking for a win. Marcel Matis scored the first and only goal of the first half for the Riverhawks as the Riverhawks' defense proved to be too tough for the Rampage to penetrate.

The Rampage came back in the second half to attack. Digital Takawira put the Rampage ahead as he scored two goals. The Riverhawks' offense would not relent and pushed on with an assist by Shawn Rockey to Fred Degand to tie the game two to two. The game intensified at the end of the second half when two players from the Riverhawks and one from the Rampage were given yellow cards in a five-minute span. With the action going back and forth the game went into overtime.

Although both teams made a push to get the ball into the net, the sudden death overtime was over when the Riverhawks' Peter Byrauhanga put the ball past the Rampage goalie after Marcel Matis's shot came back into the field of play. The Riverhawks' offense proved to be the difference as three different players scored for the Riverhawks compared to only one for the Milwaukee Rampage. The first game of the Riverhawks' season ended with them winning three to two over the Rampage.

The Riverhawks will be back in action at Sycamore High School this Saturday, May 11th at 7:30 p.m. against the Portland Timbers. For more information, please contact Lauren Westkamp at 513-591-4622.
