RiverHawks Get Back on Track with Win
January 14, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks needed a win against the hottest team in the Southern Professional Hockey League Saturday night at the James Brown Arena, and they got just that as they defeated the Pensacola Ice Flyers 4-1. The Ice Flyers had won 10 of their last 12 games going into the contest, while the RiverHawks were coming off one of their most disappointing losses of the season, but a total team-effort generated two points in the standings for Augusta.
The RiverHawks sported a different look in front of the home fans as it was "Pink the Rink" night. The RiverHawks donned specially-designed pink jerseys and socks to commemorate the night. Following the game a game-worn jersey auction was held which raised several thousand dollars in funds that will be donated to the Lydia Project. Doctors Hospital sponsored the event.
The victory maintained the RiverHawks three-point hold on first place in the SPHL as the Knoxville Ice Bears also won their game Saturday night. The win is especially important for the RiverHawks as the Ice Bears hold three games in-hand on Augusta.
RiverHawks' Captain Matt Auffrey led the way for his club scoring a highlight-reel goal and assisting on both first-period goals. Joining him amongst the offensive stars of the night was linemate Neil Graham, who was the beneficiary of Auffrey's two assists in the first period, getting the RiverHawks on the right path with his eighth and ninth goals of the season.
The RiverHawks controlled the play through the first two period taking a three-goal lead, so it was not until the third period when goaltender Peter Skoggard was called upon to come up big for his team. The Ice Flyers were finally able to break through with a goal mid-way through the final frame, but the Swedish net-minder shut the door the rest of the way, making 14 of his 25 saves in the third period to preserve the victory.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Friday, February 10th, as they play the Fayetteville FireAntz. The puck drops at 7:35pm. Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office. Additional information on the Team, tickets, and schedule are available on the RiverHawks' home on the web, www.augustariverhawks.com or by calling 706-993-2645.
