Cincinnati Riverhawks News Release
(Cincinnati, OH) â The Cincinnati Riverhawks (6-8-0, 18 points) lost tonight to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (5-6-3, 18 points) 2-0. Both teams battled the blazing sun and heat on the artificial surface while playing a hard game.
Cincinnati had the first scoring opportunity within 30 seconds when forward Marcel Matis was fouled right after kickoff. The Riverhawks sent the ball into the box but were unable to score.
The ball went back and forth across the field for the next 20 minutes or so as neither team was able to produce any quality chances to score.
Pittsburgh struck first in the 23rd minute with a goal by Aleksey Korol. Korol put up a ball from 25-30 yards out that looked like it was meant for someone making a run towards the net. Riverhawks keeper Eric Pattison, who had 8 saves on the night, seemed to think it was hit too hard and was going to go over the goal, as did everyone else. Much to everyone's surprise, the ball dropped into the net behind Pattison giving the Riverhounds a 1-0 lead.
The rest of the first half was scoreless with both teams continuing to battle for the ball and both teams have a handful of scoring opportunities.
Pittsburgh came out in the second half and controlled the ball a majority of the time. Forward Thiago Martins, who came on as a substitute at halftime, score Pittsburgh's second goal of the night. Defender Brent Jacquette placed a perfect cross from the near side to Martins who place a strong header past Pattison into the net.
Martins continued to pressure Pattison, forcing the Cincinnati keeper to make some great saves. Martins almost scored his second goal of another header from just a few yards in front of the box, but Pattison made a spectacular save.
Cincinnati attempted to put more pressure on in the second half, but were unable to prevent the shutout.
The Riverhawks next four games are on the road. Cincinnati returns home Saturday July 19 when they take on the Milwaukee Wave United at the Town & Country Sports Complex at 7:05 pm.
