RiverHawks Edged by Havoc in Overtime

January 28, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release

At this time during the season the outcome of games are often decided in a matter of seconds rather than minutes. Such was the case Saturday night in Huntsville, AL as the Huntsville Havoc edged out the Augusta RiverHawks 4-3 in overtime. Jeff Hazelwood electrified the large home crowd with the game winning goal, beating RiverHawks' net minder Peter Skoggard with just 20 seconds remaining in the frame. The goal was Hazelwood's second point of the game, as he picked up an assist earlier.

It was a tough pill to swallow for the RiverHawks, as they took a two-goal lead in the first period and outshot the Havoc heavily all night long, firing 37 shots on Huntsville's goal compared to just 24 for the hosts.

RiverHawks' forward Egor Mironov got his club on the board early in the first period with an unassisted goal. For Mironov, the goal extended an impressive five-game point streak during which he has tallied nine points. Since joining the RiverHawks just past the New Year, Mironov has been an offensive start scoring five goals and eleven points in his nine games with the club.

Just a handful of minutes later the RiverHawks added to their lead, as Branden Kosolofsky scored his eighth goal of the season. Helping out on the play was fellow forward Jim Gehring and defenseman Drew Baker.

The quick RiverHawks' start was enough for Havoc Coach Randy Murphy to make a change in goal, as Kevin Beech was replaced by Matt Hache. It was the right move by Murphy, as Hache stopped all 34 shots that were fired at him by the RiverHawks for the remainder of the game, giving his club a chance to get back into the match.

The Havoc got on the board before the end of the first period, as Dennis Sicard scored a power play goal mid-way through the frame. The RiverHawks maintained the narrow lead until late in the second period when Scott Duncan snuck a shot past Skoggard to knot the game up at two-goals apiece, which is how the game remained until overtime.

Despite giving up the final goal, the RiverHawks add another point to the standings, extending their lead atop the SPHL standings to five-points over the Knoxville Ice Bears and Columbus Cottonmouths who are tied for second.

The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Friday, February 10th as the RiverHawks play the Fayetteville FireAntz. The puck drops at 7:35pm.Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office.
