Cincinnati Riverhawks News Release

(Louisville, KY) – The Cincinnati Riverhawks lost their first exhibition game to the University of Louisville Cardinals 4-3 this past Saturday. The game was hard fought while being played in 40 degree temperatures. The Riverhawks would like to thank the University of Louisville for hosting the team at the Cardinal Park field.

"We were pleased about the quality of play between the Riverhawks and the Cardinals," said Coach Nick Ranieri. "The players did well considering only 3 had played together in a game situation. We were trying out a new formation developed during training that worked well. The players were aggressive and had many scoring opportunities."

The Riverhawks had the first quality shot on goal in the 8' of play with a cross from F Marcel Matis to F Juan Sastoque. Juan got a second chance 8 minutes later after receiving the ball from Salvatore Piriane and was able to put the ball away.

The Cardinals evened the score with a goal by Fernando Tolomelli (36'). Tolomelli scored after keeper Matt Reiswerg stopped the initial shot. Louisville scored two more times with goals by Simon Bird (45', 51'), before the Hawks next goal.

The Riverhawks tallied two goals in the second half, Sastoque (56') and M Leslie Fitzpatrick (70'), but the Cardinals were able to score a final go-ahead goal to win the game 4-3.

"We had many shots on goal, which is good," said Ranieri. "We hope to perform better against Columbus on Tuesday, especially with the addition of some international and indoor players joining the team."

When asked how the final roster is shaping up, Ranieri said the roster is "solidifying".

The Hawk's next exhibition game is Tuesday April 1 against the Columbus Crew at 7:00. The game is at the Crew's training facility in Obetz and is the Keith Evans Memorial Match. Visit www.crew.com/stadium/obetz.shtml for more information about the facility. The remaining exhibition schedule is as follows:
