Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks used an explosive second period that featured six goals and a line brawl propel them to a 10-3 victory over the Louisiana Ice Gators. The win is the RiverHawks' sixth in a row and moves them into a tie for the third place in the Southern Professional Hockey League standings.
The RiverHawks enjoyed a hat trick effort from Branden Kosolofsky and two-goal games from Matt Auffrey, Ryan Olidis, and Egor Mironov. Joe Tolles, Luke Lucyk, Jason Price, and Neil Graham each had three-point nights.
The RiverHawks and Ice Gators exchanged goals early in the first period. RiverHawks' captain Matt Auffrey stole a puck in the slot and made a couple of beautiful deke before sliding the puck across to Kosolofsky who fired a one-timer into the back of the net.
Just 13 seconds later the Ice Gators tied the game, as Eric Tallent hit Robert Short with a pass. Short fired a bullet of a shot over the shoulder of RiverHawks' goaltender Jon Olthuis.
The RiverHawks took the period over from there, starting with a goal from Egor Mironov as he drove wide on an Ice Gators' defenseman and poked the puck inside the goal post. That was followed with a highlight-reel effort from Auffrey and a laser of a shot from Ryan Olidis to make the game 4-1.
The RiverHawks exploded for six goals in the second period. Auffrey scored his second goal on a deflection off of a shot from Joe Tolles. Mironov followed it up with his own second goal by following up a breakaway attempt by Aaron Mcgill and converting the rebound.
Kosolofsky then completed his hat trick with a pair of goals, one on a snap shot from the left faceoff circle, and then poked a loose puck beside the net past the goal line.
The RiverHawks were then handed a seven-minute 5-on-3 power play after a line brawl that saw the ejection of two Ice Gators players. Lucyk and Olidis each scored goals during the lengthy man-advantage to complete the RiverHawks' scoring. The Ice Gators were intent on winning the third period with the rest of the game out of hand, and managed to beat Olthuis with two shots in the third period.
The RiverHawks are back in action at the James Brown Arena Tuesday, February 8th as they face the Fayetteville FireAntz. The puck drops at 7:30pm.
