Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks continued to be unable to catch a break Thursday night when they dropped a 3-1 decision to the Pensacola Ice Flyers. The loss drops the RiverHawks' record to 0-5-1.
Things began optimistically for the RiverHawks as they jumped out to an early lead. Just past the eight minute mark defenseman Mike Switzer took a pass from fellow blue-liner Drew Baker and fired a shot towards the net. The RiverHawks had plenty of traffic in front of the net blocking Ice Flyers' goaltender Steve Christie's view of the shot, and it squeaked through his pads for the one-goal Augusta lead.
The RiverHawks continued to carry the momentum through the remaining minutes of the first period but were unable to build upon their lead. Their solid play continued into the second period, but a defensive zone mishap gave the Ice Flyers the opportunity they needed to tie the game. Forward Jordan Chong fired a shot that missed the near-side post, but the puck took an unfortunate bounce off of the end boards and came straight out in front where teammate Ryan Salvis beat RiverHawks' goaltender BJ O'Brien to the puck and converted.
The third period began with an Ice Flyers' power play, but the RiverHawks were able to kill it off and turn their attention to offense, however Christie continued to stand tall for his team turning away all of the RiverHawks opportunities. It was not until just past the 16-minute mark of the third period that the Ice Flyers were able to take their first lead of the game. Defenseman Aaron Schmit picked up a loose puck along the boards and fired it towards the net. John Dunbar drove hard to the RiverHawks' net and batted the puck out of mid-air to beat O'Brien.
The Ice Flyers managed to protect their zone effectively for the remaining minutes on the clock, and when the RiverHawks pulled O'Brien for the extra attacker, Pensacola took advantage of the empty net. Forward Patrick Knowlton scored his first of the season when he picked up a turned-over puck and fired it from just inside the blue line beating the RiverHawks defenders into the open cage.
The win gives the Ice Flyers a 4-2-1 record on the season.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow night at 7:35pm at the James Brown Arena. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling the RiverHawks at 706 993 2645 or in-person at the James Brown Arena box office. Season tickets and Flex Packs are still available.
