LOVES PARK, Ill. - A former third baseman will be among the pitchers coming into the Rockford RiverHawks' spring camp next month.

Rockford's only professional baseball team announced Friday that it has signed right-hander Alex Thieroff. Thieroff spent last season, his first in professional baseball, in the Arizona organization after a conversion to the mound late in his college career.

Scouting reports on Thieroff described him as the hardest thrower in the Arizona organization, RiverHawks co-owner and director of baseball operations Dave Ciarrachi said. The right-hander was consistently clocked at 93-95 miles per hour.

"He's got a great arm and we're going to look at him as being a real force and a real factor in our bullpen," Ciarrachi said.

Last year, with the Diamondbacks' short-season Class A Yakima affiliate, Thieroff was 1-0 with a 3.04 earned-run average and two saves in 21 relief appearances. He struck out 22, walked 10 and held opposing batters to a .223 average over 26 2/3 innings.

The Diamondbacks signed Thieroff as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Southern Indiana. As a college senior last spring, he was 2-2 with a 5.27 ERA as a starter for the NCAA Division II Eagles. He hit .320 with eight home runs and 47 RBI and was named the third baseman on the all-Great Lakes Valley Conference first team. In 2008, Thieroff started a combined no-hitter of Oakland City University.

The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 18th season in 2010. The RiverHawks' ninth season begins at 7:05 p.m. May 20 against the Schaumburg Flyers at Road Ranger Stadium. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Games are broadcast live on ESPN 1380 (WTJK-AM) and on ESPN1380.com. Fans can also visit the RiverHawks online at www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
