Riverdragons Send Three to NBA Summer Leagues
July 17, 2003 - NBA G League (G League)
Columbus Riverdragons News Release
COLUMBUS, GAâThree members of the 2002-03 Columbus Riverdragons squad have earned spots on NBA Summer League rosters.
National Basketball Development League scoring champ Nate Johnson, point guard Nate Green, and forward Greg Stempin will perform in front of NBA general managers, coaching staffs, and scouts in their efforts to win roster spots for NBA training camps that begin in late September.
Johnson, a second-team All-NBDL selection after pacing the D-League in scoring at 19.2 points per game, will compete for the San Antonio Spurs in the Reebok Summer Pro League in Boston, Mass., July 14-20 and the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City, Utah, July 18-26. The 6-7 shooting guard out of Louisville teamed with NBDL Most Valuable Player Devin Brown on Tuesday night in Boston, combining to score 38 points as the Spurs defeated the New Jersey Nets, 93-74. Johnson tallied 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting with seven rebounds and three assists.
Green, who finished fourth in the NBDL in assists, averaging 5.1 distributions per game, is currently competing for the Golden State Warriors in the Southern California Summer Pro League that will run through July 20th at the Pyramid in Long Beach, CA.
Stempin, the Dragons fourth leading scorer (10.6 ppg) and rebounder (4.8) during the 2002-03 campaign, joins the Denver Nuggets and Coach Ettore Messina's club for the Southern California Summer Pro League and will be part of T.R. Dunn's squad for the Rocky Mountain Revue. "Greg is a solid basketball player. He can mix it up inside and he has a nice jump shot from the perimeter," said Nuggets Head Coach Jeff Bzdelik. "I like his aggressiveness and tenacity."
A total of 63 players and two head coaches from the NBDL's first two seasons are participating at four sites for NBA Summer League action: the Pepsi Pro Summer League in Orlando, Fla., Shaw Reebok Pro Summer League in Boston, Mass., Southern California Summer Pro League in Long Beach, CA, and the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City, Utah.
