
Rivera's first goal catapults Storm past La Raza

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - Edgar Rivera's first Major Indoor Soccer League goal could not have come at a more important moment. On the brink of losing a fourth straight match, the Chicago Storm benefited from the rookie's first tally with 18 seconds remaining as the Storm defeated La Raza de Monterrey, 11-9, in MISL action Saturday night at the Sears Centre Arena.
The Storm (14-10) are one win away from clinching an MISL playoff berth after snapping their three-game losing streak. They also halted Monterrey's seven-game winning streak. La Raza drops to 13-12.
Next up for the Storm is a 3:35 p.m. (CST) road match against the Detroit Ignition on Sunday, March 9, at Compuware Arena. The Storm's next home game is at 7 p.m. March 22 against the Baltimore Blast. Earlier in the fourth quarter Saturday, the Storm rallied from a 9-6 deficit with a clutch three-point goal from Fabinho at the 13:29 mark. The restart goal, assisted from Carlos "Chile" Farias, tied the score at 9-9. With a little momentum on their side, Wheeling, Ill., native Rivera netted his first goal past La Raza goalkeeper Jose Bontti, with a huge roar from a season-high Sears Centre crowd of 5,823.
In the net, the Storm's Jeff Richey made 11 saves and allowed seven of Monterrey's nine points. Chicago's Branko Savic allowed a two-point goal as a sixth attacker in the fourth. For La Raza, Jose Bontti made 14 saves.
Other goal scorers for the Storm included Matthew Stewart's two-pointer in the second quarter, a power play goal from Stephen Armstrong in the third quarter and an Ian Bennett tally in the fourth quarter. For Monterrey, Ivan Medina had two goals, including a three-pointer, Dino Delevski had a two-pointer and Jose Luiz Birche had a two-pointer.
Notes: Chicago's Mark Ughy received a red card in the third quarter Saturday. He will miss Sunday's match against Detroit. ... John Ball, who sat out Saturday's match with a hamstring injury, should play against Detroit this weekend. ... Duelo performed following Saturday's match to cap off this season's Univision Concert Series.
