River Kings Knocked down by Nebraska
Cedar Rapids - The Cedar Rapids River Kings fell on the road 66-42 to the Nebraska Danger Friday night. The River Kings fall to 1-7 on the season while the Danger move to 5-4 and are over .500 for the first time since they were 1-0 after week one.
The River Kings new starter at quarterback, Ben Wilkerson, took a little while to settle in to his new role. He finished the game 7-14 for 65 yards, scoring two touchdowns with two interceptions.
Running back Nate Chavious had a ten yard touchdown run with 6:42 left in the third quarter to get Cedar Rapids their first touchdown of the night. He finished the night with ten attempts for just 20 yards and the single touchdown. He added a kickoff return for a touchdown with 57 seconds left in the game for the River Kings final score of the game.
Wilkerson led the River Kings rushing attack, earning 45 yards on 14 attempts and a touchdown.
Defensively the River Kings had no answer for TJ Armstrong and the Nebraska offense.
The Danger ended the game with 112 yards through the air, and Armstrong throwing for three touchdowns. They added 89 rushing yards and scored four total times on the ground.
Both teams had not-so-stellar showings on special teams. The River Kings earned 171 yards on nine total kickoff returns, including Chavious' touchdown runback. The Danger had eight kickoff returns for 207 yards and a touchdown of their own, scored by Eric Thomas.
Cedar Rapids could not get their offense going out of the gate, generating just nine points in the first half. Wilkerson was just one for four throwing the ball in the first half. He had two interceptions through the first 30 minutes as well.
Kicker Phillip Nwosu had all nine points for Cedar Rapids in the first half, going three for four.
Wilkerson also ran the ball for 11 yards on eight attempts. Chavious rushed four times for just a single yard in the first half.
The River Kings are next in action next Saturday at Iowa. The game will kickoff at 7:05 from the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
