Phoenix Rising FC News Release
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Phoenix Rising FC handed San Diego its first loss since May 22 via a James Musa goal in the ninth minute to down Loyal SC, 1-0, at Torero Stadium tonight.
The win increased Rising's lead in the Pacific Division to seven points over second-place Orange County SC. The defending Western Conference Champions now return home to Wild Horse Pass next Saturday, July 31, against Rio Grande Valley Toros FC (7:30 p.m.).
Rising got on the board after Rufat Dadashov and Santi Moar combined on the left side to produce an early corner kick. The corner was served into the back corner of the six-yard box, where Joe Farrell won the ball, heading it back across the face of goal. Kevon Lambert challenged Trey Muse in the center of the area and the goalkeeper was unable to control the ball, letting it slip through to the back post for Musa to sneak in and tap a shot over the line to make it 1-0.
Despite San Diego controlling possession 73-27 heading into the half, it was Rising that led the way in shots, 7-2.
Phoenix nearly added another goal just two minutes into the second half when Darnell King got forward to the end line and played a ball back to wide-open striker, Dadashov. Phoenix's No. 9 rattled the woodwork, cracking a shot off the near post, but the chance skipped away from danger after deflecting off the frame.
San Diego's Miguel Ibarra almost provided a spark for Loyal SC in the second minute of stoppage-time but Rising goalkeeper Andre Rawls punched the ball to himself and smothered the rebound to secure the clean sheet and three points for the visitors.
Rising's defensive scheme stymied San Diego all night. Phoenix outshot San Diego 18-5 at the final whistle and put six shots to none on target.
