New England Riptide News Release

Lowell, Ma- June 14 -- Tonight's game between the New England Riptide and the Venezuelan Olympic team figured to be a good one, with Eileen Canney, winner of Thursday's game, facing Venezuelan star Mariangee Bogado. Canney was sharp all night and Bogado ran into trouble as the Riptide won their third in a row, going away 10-1 with three in the third, five in the fifth and two in the sixth. Gina Carbonatto had five RBIs on the night to lead the Riptide with a walk, double and triple in three at bats.

The Riptide got all they needed for Canney in the third. With one out TJ Eadus, in her first professional at bat, doubled down the left field line. Alex Sutton was hit by a pitch for the third time this series and Jackie Pasquerella singled to center, loading the bases. That set the stage for Carbonatto to hit a bases clearing triple into the right field corner. Carbonatto was thrown out trying to stretch into the first inside the park home run ever at Martin Softball Field.

Venezuela got to Canney for their only run in the fourth and the Riptide put it away in the fifth. Walks hurt Venezuela as Sutton and Carbonatto drew walks to put runners at second and third with one out. Jess Merchant singled to center, but Yaicey Sojo misplayed the ball allowing it to go to the wall. To make matters worse, Sojo misfired the ball to third allowing Merchant to score making it 6-1 Riptide. The Riptide continued to pour it on, aided by a third Venezuelan error and the bats of Merchant and Carbonatto.

Canney picked up her fourth win for the Riptide against two losses allowing one run and six hits and struck out eight. The teams complete the series on Sunday at 5:05 at Martin Softball Field, the Riptide looking for a series sweep. Jocelyn Forest is expected to start for the Riptide.
