SAN DIEGO â The San Diego Riptide will be holding open-player tryouts on Saturday, November 16, 2002 at Scripps Ranch High School, which located at 10410 Treena St., San Diego 92131. Registration will start at 7:30am and the workout will begin promptly at 9:ooam.
Two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner got discovered while playing ArenaBall and some of the greatest legends in the Arena game were found at open tryouts like Barry Wagner, George LaFrance and Stevie Thomas.
Most of the 2002 Riptide roster, including First Team All-af2 WR/LB Rico Curtis were "discovered" in the Riptide Open Player Tryout Camps. In 2002, 27 players either came to training camp or eventually played for the Riptide came from open tryouts.
Pre-registration is highly recommended. Prospective players should click here to fill out the tryout application and mail a $40 check or money order to:

If pre-registration is not completed, cost on the day of the tryout will be $50. Pre-registration must be completed and received by the Riptide no later than Wednesday, November 13, 2002. Checks will not be accepted on November 16, only money orders or cash.
In addition, if there is any college or pro football experience, player biographies and/or game film may be sent to the above address to the attention of Riptide Head Coach Cree Morris.
"You never know where you are going to find players," Morris says. "That's why we do the tryout camp."
All Riptide football candidates are required to wear appropriate attire for non-contact football drills, i.e., t-shirts, shorts or sweats. There will be no helmets or shoulder pads in the workout.
Potential players will go through various non-contact drills such as a 40-yard dash, shuttle run, standing long jump, 225-pound bench press test, as well as one-on-one drills.
Possible positions are quarterback, offensive specialist, defensive specialist, offensive/defensive lineman, wide receiver/linebacker, wide receiver/defensive back, fullback/linebacker and kicker
In their inaugural season, the Riptide were named as arenafootball2's Expansion Franchise of the Year, were third in the league in attendance and advanced to the National Conference Semi-finals before losing to the eventual ArenaCup champions. The Riptide averaged 45.4 points per game with most games decided in the final quarter of play.
