Riptide opens Thursday in Washington
May 27, 2008 Lowell, Ma. -- The New England Riptide travels to Washington tonight to face the defending Cowles Cup champion Washington Glory on May 29 at 7:05 in Sterling Va. The Riptide will be attempting to regain the Cup the team won in 2006. The Riptide and Glory are veteran teams, each with thirteen of last year's players returning, and both are considered to be contenders. Most notable for the Glory will be 2007 Player of the Year Amber Jackson, along with pitchers Sarah Pauly and Desiree Serrano. This fine staff adds Lisa Ferguson, former Texas A&M star and first round draft pick Taryn Mowatt, who will not be available for this series due to participation in the College World Series.
The Riptide pitching staff should be up for the task, however, with all three starters returning. All time NPF win and strikeout leader Jocelyn Forest heads the staff. Eileen Canney returns for her second season after bursting onto the scene last year and sporting a 9-6 record along with a league leading 1.16 ERA and league leading 137 strikeouts. Rounding out the staff is Erica Beach (6-2 in 2007), a fifth year player, third season with the Riptide. Following the series with the Force, the Riptide heads north to Philadelphia to take on the rejuvenated Philadelphia Force. The Force has finished out of the playoffs for two years, but will be stronger this year having had the first two picks in the winter draft. The Force picked up Katie Burkhart from Arizona State who will be eligible at the conclusion of the College World Series. Burkhart led Arizona State to their first PAC 10 softball title ever and is given a good chance to win the Series. Their second pick, Megan Gibson, out of Texas A&M, will give the Force more of the offense they previously lacked.
The Riptide finally returns for the home opener against the Venezuelan Olympic team on June 12. Each NPF team will play five home series and five away series against other league teams in addition to two home series against international teams. Tickets for all Riptide home games can be purchased on line at www.neriptide.com or by calling 866-4-RIPTIDE.
