Riptide Loses Heartbreaker 4-3 in Tenth Inning
Lowell, Ma - Germaine Fairchild took over the head coaching position for the Riptide today and the Thunder gave her a few gifts in the beginning but were unable to drive in the winning run when they had the chance and lost in ten innings 4-3.
The Thunder started quickly off starter Jocelyn Forest. Kristen Zaleski began with a soft slap into left field. Then, after retiring the next two hitters, Shanna Diller drew a walk. Zaleski the scored on a single to left by Tonya Callahan to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead.
The Thunder stretched it to 3-0 in the second, again the damage coming with two outs. This time it was a Beth Boden single followed by a Zaleski opposite field home run. The Riptide got one back in the second courtesy of Thunder pitching. Brown walked three out of the first four batters she faced then left the game in favor of Cassidy Scoggins. Scoggins walked in the first run before retiring the Riptide.
The Thunder gave the Riptide two more in the third as they tied the game 3-3. Gina Carbonatto lifted a fly ball to right which Diller misplayed and dropped. Another walk and singles by Erica Beach and KJ Kelley led to the Riptide scores.
The next six innings were scoreless. Eileen Canney came in for the Riptide in the eighth and Allison Kime came in to pitch in the sixth for the Thunder. The tenth inning began the tie-breaker with a runner at second and the Thunder scored their run. In the Riptide half of the inning Carri Martin was placed on second, was sacrificed to third by Kelley, but was out on the next play coming home on a squeeze effectively ending the Riptide's chances.
The Riptide return to action at Martin Softball Field in a series with the Chinese Taipei Olympic Team next weekend. Games are Saturday at 1:05 and 7:05, Sunday at 5:05 and Monday at 7:05.
