New England Riptide News Release
Sterling, Va. - The New England Riptide took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the 6th inning last night, but could not hold on and dropped a 6-5 decision to the Washington Glory in the fourth and final game of the series. After three innings the Glory led 2-1, all the scoring on solo home runs. For the Glory it was Nicole Barber in the first and Courtney Bures in the third and for the Riptide it was Jessica Merchant in the second.
The Riptide scored three in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. Alex Sutton and Carri Martin had singles and player/coach Germaine Fairchild hit a three run home run. That chased Glory starter, Lisa Ferguson. Ferguson gave way to Desiree Serrano. The Riptide added a run in the sixth when Sutton singled home Jackie Pasquerella who had led off the inning with a single. The lead proved to be fragile when Bures hit her second home run of the night, this one a three run shot to tie the score at five. The Glory won it in the bottom of the seventh when Callie Piper led off with a walk and LaDonia Hughes and Barber hit consecutive singles to score Piper.
Serrano got the win for the Glory while Eileen Canney took the loss for the Riptide in a complete game performance. Canney's record is now 1-1.
The Riptide heads to Philadelphia to play a four game series with the Force next weekend before returning to Martin Softball Field to take on the Venezuelan Olympic team beginning on June 12th.
