New England Riptide News Release
June 6, 2008 - Allentown, Pa - The pitching match-ups for tonight's game between the New England Riptide and Philadelphia Force were Erica Beach (0-1) for the Riptide and Margo Pruis (2-0) for the Force.
The Force got on the board with two in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Beach started by walking Claire Burnum. When Chelsea Spencer laid down a bunt, the throw from KJ Kelley hit her on the helmet for an error giving the Force runners at second and third. A wild pitch brought in Burnum, and Spencer scored on a Jenna Hall sacrifice. The Riptide scored one in the third, but the Force came back with two to take a 4-1 lead. Walks hurt both pitchers as both walked the first two batters they faced in the inning. Gina Carbonatto singled to bat in a run for the Riptide and Jenna Hall batted in one for the Force. The Force scored their second run on a throwing error by Lisa Iancin. Iancin singled to lead off the fourth, and again, Pruis had trouble finding the strike zone, walking Pasquerella and Embree and hitting pinch hitter Lyndsey Angus with a pitch.
Eileen Canney came on to relieve Beach in the bottom of the fourth and held the Force at bay for three innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Pruis also settled down though through the fifth and sixth, but ran into trouble in the seventh with one out by walking Angus. Carbonatto hit a hard single to right and Jessica Merchant drove them in with a double to left center to tie the game. The Riptide lost it in the seventh when Hudson slapped a single to left. Meghan Wolfer reached on a bunt and Burnum ended the game with a hard single to right that gave the Force a 5-4 win.
The Riptide and Force finish their four game series on Saturday. The Riptide then return to Lowell for their home opener at Martin Softball Field to take on the Venezuelan Olympic team beginning on June 12.
