Riptide Lose Final Game to Thunder 1-0, Split Series
Rockford, Ill- Two Olympic Champions hooked up in another pitchers duel in Rockford this afternoon, Cat Osterman, 2004 team for Rockford and 2000 team member, Danielle Henderson for the Riptide. Both pitchers held their opponents scoreless for most of the game when the Thunder pushed a run home in the bottom of the fifth to win the game 1-0. With two outs, Jackie Wong had a swinging bunt single. KJ Kelley got of the catcher's box quickly but was unable to throw out the speedy Wong. With Kristen Zaleski up, Wong stole second and that caused the Riptide to intentionally walk Zaleski. That strategy did not work well as pinch hitter, Abbie Sims, singled in Wong to score the game's only run. Jocelyn Forest came in to finish the game and got the last four outs.
Actually, the Thunder might have scored earlier if not for the heroics of Jackie Pasquerella at third who twice saved runs in the early innings. Pasquerella got one of the Riptide's only two hits on the day, the other one being Jess Merchant. Osterman was masterful as she struck out 11 for the Thunder. The Riptide finally return to Lowell sporting a record of 3-5. Coach Sharon Drysdale, although not delighted with the record is optimistic about the team's chances now that they are coming in for a long home stand. Noting the team is beginning to swing the bat better (with the exception of today) and are more comfortable with one another, Drysdale expects the Riptide to be in the running for first place shortly and likes their chance to repeat as NPF National champs.
Speaking of champs, the long awaited ring ceremony with the presentation of the Cowles Cup by Mayor William Martin will take place at 6:45 on Thursday at Martin Softball Field in Lowell right before the start of the Riptide's four game series with Venezuela. There are still some tickets available for opening day, however supply is limited.
