Riptide lose at Denver 18-15

CARSON, CALIFORNIA - Attackman Terry Riordan (Hopkins '95) had five goals and attackman Spencer Ford (Towson '99) added two goals and six assists for the Los Angeles Riptide, who dropped to 2-2 on the season after losing to the Denver Outlaws, 18-15, before a crowd of 8,473 at INVESCO Field at Mile High in Denver on Saturday night.

Bud Light MVP/attackman Drew Westervelt countered with four goals and seven points for the Outlaws, who improved to 2-1 on the season, and teammate and attackman Brendan Mundorf finished with five goals and eight points.

Saturday's game featured a combined 12.5 minutes in penalties and 13 power play chances. Eight of the penalty minutes were assessed to the Outlaws, but the Riptide failed to take advantage, going 0-for-9 with the man-advantage. Denver finished the game 0-for-4 with the man-advantage.

The Riptide took their only lead of the game at 6:31 of the opening quarter thanks to a goal from Riordan, but the Outlaws scored four straight goals to close the quarter with a 4-1 lead.

Ford assisted on all three Riptide goals scored in the second quarter, and his third assist led to a goal from midfielder Graham Gill (Navy '05) at 5:26 of the quarter. Gill's goal pulled the Riptide to within one at 5-4, but Denver responded with the last two goals of the quarter to take a 7-4 lead after 30 minutes of play.

The Riptide and the Outlaws each scored four goals in the third quarter. Ford, Gill and Riordan found the score sheet in the third, and so did the Riptide's Michael Watson (Virginia '97). Still the Riptide trailed the Outlaws 11-8 after three quarters of play.

The Riptide matched a season high with seven goals in the fourth quarter, and two of their goals were scored shorthanded (Riordan and Ford), but the Outlaws scored seven goals of their own in the quarter to make the final score 18-15 in favor of the home team.

The Riptide and the Outlaws each finished the game with 28 groundballs. Riptide face-off specialist Anthony Kelly (Ohio State '03) finished the game with 20 face-off wins (20-for-37). Riptide goalkeeper Mickey Jarboe (Navy '00) faced 34 shots on goal and made 16 saves.

Saturday's Riptide game against the Outlaws will be featured on ESPN 2 as part of the network's "MLL Game of the Week" on Tuesday, June 12 at 5 p.m. Pacific. Join members of the 2007 Riptide team and staff at Rudy's Pub & Grill in Newport Beach (3110 Newport Blvd), the official OC home of the Riptide, for dinner, drinks and the game. Rudy's will offer happy hour specials until 6 p.m. and spaghetti dinners for just $4.99 to all fans on hand to watch the Riptide play Denver at INVESCO Field at Mile High. The Riptide's brand new team mascot, Rippy, will also be on hand to assist as Riptide staff members host promotions throughout the event.

The Riptide will return to action next Saturday, June 16 when they travel north to meet the San Francisco Dragons at 1 p.m. Pacific.

The Riptide's next home game is set for Saturday, June 23 versus the Chicago Machine at The Home Depot Center, with the game scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
