New York Lizards News Release

The first-place Washington Bayhawks dealt the Long Island Lizards their first loss of the season on Saturday, defeating the Lizards 18-14, in front of 1,997 fans at Georgetown University. Long Island led 14-13 early in the fourth quarter, but the Bayhawks scored the final five goals of the game to secure the win.

Washington led for nearly the entire game, holding 5-1 and 10-3 leads in the first half. The Lizards cut the score to 10-5 at halftime after Stephen Berger scored, and Pete Vlahakis followed it with a goal off the faceoff win only 8 seconds later.

Vlahakis dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 26 of 34 draws.

Tim Goettelmann scored to start the second half, and Adam Borcz followed it with Long Island's first two-point goal of the season, cutting the deficit to 10-8.

The teams continued to trade goals until Long Island, trailing 13-10, scored four straight to grab a 14-13 lead, their first and only lead of the game.

Borcz led the Lizards with three goals, including the two-pointer, while Stephen Berger (3 goals), Tim Goettelmann (2 goals) and Chris Massey (2 goals) were also impressive on offense.

Nick Murtha made 15 saves in his first loss of the season.

Keith Cromwell, the team's leading scorer and last week's Bud Light MVP, was unavailable due to a work commitment.

The Lizards (2-1) host the Philadelphia Barrage in a matinee next Saturday at Mitchel Athletic Complex. Faceoff is slated for 1:00 PM.
