Saint John Riptide News Release
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Riptide will look to bounce back Thursday night against the defending National Basketball League of Canada champions after coming off a 23-point home loss Wednesday to the Kitchener-Waterloo Titans.
The Titans used a strong third-quarter surge to build a 20-point lead and never looked back, downing the Riptide 107-84. With the win the Titans improved to 2-2 while Riptide fell to 0-4.
"I think what we have to do is just do our jobs and execute our assignments on both sides of the ball," Riptide coach Nelson Terroba said following the game. "London (Lightning) will be good in transition, so we're going to have to get back on defense, whatever the coverage's are. The answer is always the same. It's really doesn't change with the opponent. We just have to execute."
Frank Bartley led the Riptide with 15 points while Jeremiah Mordi added 14 on just six shots. Randy Phillips scored 12 points while Daniel Dingle contributed 10.
For the Titans, Damon Lynn scored a team-high 17. Greg Morrow chipped in with 16.
K-W shot 50 per cent from the field and 46 per cent from behind three-point line while Saint John hit on 40 per cent of their field goal attempts and 30 per cent from beyond the arc.
"The reality of our situation is that we've got a group that has a lot of opportunity to grow," Terroba said. "They are being asked to do a lot of things. Some are young, some are new to the league and some are in new roles. "Some of our players are being asked to do a lot. So one way to look at it is that it's an opportunity but it's an accelerated growth cycle for a lot of guys."
The Titans had an 82-52 advantage after three quarters, outscoring Saint John 32-19 in the frame.
The Riptide trailed 50-43 at the half after going on a 15-2 run midway through the quarter to briefly take the lead, 36-35.
Bartley led the Riptide at half with 12 points, Phillips and Dingle each had eight.
Morrow paced Kitchener-Waterloo with 10.
The Titans led 26-17 after one quarter, powered by a 14-3 run in the final three minutes.
The Riptide finish a three-game home stand Thursday against London at Harbour Station. Tip off is 7 p.m.
They'll have a week to prepare before heading out on a two-game swing through Ontario. Saint John will be in the Nickel City on Dec. 6 to take on the expansion Sudbury 5, who are 3-1. Two days later the 'Tide will be in London for a rematch with the Lightning, 2-1.
The Riptide's next home game is Dec. 27 when they face the Halifax Hurricanes in a 7 p.m. start at Harbour Station.
