September 6, 2002 - arenafootball2 (af2)
San Diego Riptide News Release

The San Diego Riptide are proud to announce the beginning of a distinctive program that rewards high school football players that epitomize the uniqueness of Arena Football and will give promising writers and photographers exposure and experience covering sports.

The Riptide award-winning website, sandiegoriptide.com, will be awarding an Ironman of the Week each week to the San Diego county high school varsity player that has the best performance on both sides of the ball - offense and defense, and even special teams. The winner will receive a certificate and his team will receive tickets for the Riptide's season opener, where all weekly winners will be announced before the game. Additional tickets to that game will be available at discounted rates for family members, friends and classmates.

At the end of the high school season a player will be selected as the "sandiegoriptide.com Ironman of the Year", and will be awarded a trophy at the Riptide's 2003 home opener. The qualifications will be contingent upon who had the best offensive and defensive season. If you would like to nominate a player for the "Ironman of the Week", please send in the player's name, high school, statistics and why that player should be nominated for that week's game.

Also, please include your name, address and phone number. You can fax it to 858.455.8379 (Attention Ironman) or e-mail us at ironman@sandiegoriptide.com. Nominations can come from players, coaches, family members, booster club members or fans. Everything will be verified before voting takes place.

"We play on offense and defense all game in ArenaBall and that's what many and/or most student-athletes do in high school football," said Riptide Head Coach Cree Morris. "Our players hadn't played both ways since high school. They all enjoy being in there every play, getting a chance to score a touchdown offensively, then go down and make the game-winning tackle on defense."

In addition, the Riptide are asking for volunteer high school student writers and photographers for every San Diego county high school that has a football team to write game stories and features, and take pictures throughout the high school football season. Soon on sandiegoriptide.com, there will be a feature on the left menu bar (H.S. Ironman) that will go to a section of the website devoted to San Diego County high school football with original stories, game recaps and photos.

"My first sports writing experience came my senior year in high school when I wrote about our team in our local paper," said Riptide Vice President Andy Lopusnak. "It was a great experience for me and hope this program can possibly start the career of a future sports writer or PR director. It's a great opportunity for student-athletes, student-writers and student-photographers."

Volunteer columnists and photographers will also have the opportunity to write feature stories and take photos for the Riptide during the 2003 af2 season. E-mail ironman@sandiegoriptide.com to request the San Diego county high school of your choice. All game stories, features and usable photos will be posted on the Riptide website with credit given to those individuals who will then become "beat writers" for that particular team and/or teams.

Riptide 2003 season tickets are on sale right now and begin at just $56. To reserve your seats at the Sports Arena for eight games of hard-hitting, high-scoring, non-stop of Riptide football, call 866-RIPTIDE during normal business hours Monday-Friday.
